The calm before the…

Well hello there! I forgot that I have a tumblr (again) and life has been rather topsy-turvy of late, so I fear that I have been a bit tardy with my posts. Not like I’ve ever had a regular schedule or been terribly reliable, but this recent break has been longer than usual what with packing and unpacking and moving and so forth and so on. Mea Culpa! Anyway, here’s a little mix of tunes that I’ve been listening to… they’re rather calm for the most part (hence the tranquil “walk towards the light” photo) and range from somewhat old to some new finds off of the usual music blogs:

A quick word about some of these bands:

Last summer, I saw Merrill Garbus fronting the band Sister Suvi, presumably a side project from Tune-Yards, as they opened for Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. During the concert, I remember turning to Carly and being totally bamboozled—confronted with a complete mis-mash of beats and bending tones I didn’t really know how to digest their music. However odd their sound, though, Garbus stood out in stark contrast from her bandmates with her spectacular voice and mad uke skills, and I am so happy to have rediscovered her in Tune-yards. Check out the rest of Bird Brains if you have a chance—it’s an awesome record.

Freelance Whales are coming to Philly in late January! I don’t live in Philly anymore as most of you know, but I’m coming back around then and I can’t say that their presence at the Church isn’t a significant factor in my decision to visit. This band is phenomenal—a sort of electronic folksy sound along with my favorite instrument of all time, the banjo. Chances are if you’ve spent any significant amount of time in Williamsburg, Brooklyn you’ve already heard these guys—they got their start playing in the subways around there and there are some cool videos of them on youtube doing their thing as trains rush by which are definitely worth a gander. Anyway, Weathervanes is one of my favorite albums of late and I’d highly recommend checking them out!
